Zebra finches / Overlapping-call and context dataset review
V33DA++ adds overlapping calls and context, not meaning
Pinned companion-dataset card reviewed 2026 · Note reviewed 2026-10-23
V33DA++ is a companion to the physically verified zebra-finch caller-attribution dataset. Its card describes 3,784 reviewer-verified overlapping-call rows, 33,625 single-vocalizer events with plus/minus two seconds of context, and 3,784 overlapping events with the same context. The overlap_padded bucket repeats the overlap events with padding, so the provider's 41,193-row total is not 41,193 unique events. The recordings and all ten birds are the same as V33DA. The card suggests source separation, vocal-activity detection, audio-visual synchronization and active-speaker detection; caller evidence is anchored by on-body accelerometers, which are an oracle label source rather than an admissible predictor.
What we reviewed · Pinned dataset-card and public code/split metadata reviewed; media uninspected
Reviewed the V33DA++ Hugging Face dataset card at immutable revision bb31f73e2191278dd4965af01502c42380cd597d, including bucket counts, data-field definitions, suggested tasks and rights notice; checked the provider API revision/date/license metadata. Rechecked the linked GitHub repository's current main revision e988b985e38909b40b2705cdad994e3d9307181e, its training imports and split-preparation script as public text, and the Git tree. No dataset files, media, Parquet, code or weights were acquired or run; no specialist review occurred.
Not independently reviewed by an avian-bioacoustics, animal-behavior or ML/statistical-evaluation specialist.
Study at a glance
- Overlap bucket
- 3,784 reviewer-verified overlapping-call rows, with caller lists derived from on-body accelerometer verification.
- Padded bucket
- 33,625 single-vocalizer events with two seconds of audio/video context on each side and original event boundaries preserved.
- Overlap-padded bucket
- The same 3,784 overlap events with two seconds of context; this repeats the overlap bucket rather than adding unique events.
- Independent animals
- Ten zebra finches across the same three experiments and recordings as V33DA; the larger row count does not increase animal-level sample size.
- Provider size
- 41,193 rows and 167 GB listed by the provider; row count includes the repeated overlap-padded bucket.
- Declared license
- CC BY 4.0 on the dataset card; software, preprocessing tools, manuscript and model weights have separate terms.
- Talk2Nature use
- Metadata-only. No data or media acquired; no code or model run; no benchmark result.

What this does — and doesn’t — establish
This is a signal-processing and attribution resource, not a communication or interaction dataset: the reviewed card does not supply independently observed behavior, addressee, receiver response, intent or call meaning labels. It adds temporal context and overlapping events, not new animals or an independent cohort; results remain bounded to the same ten finches and controlled recording setup. The provider lists 167 GB for the release. The linked code repository's current main is still commit e988b985e38909b40b2705cdad994e3d9307181e; scripts/train.py imports v33da.data modules absent from that tree, while the split-preparation script writes session and held-out-experiment date assignments but no auditable leave-one-bird-out folds. The code path is not reproducible from the reviewed snapshot. The dataset card declares CC BY 4.0, while preprocessing tools and code are separately licensed; these declarations are not independent clearance.
What we can build on
V33DA++ makes a useful method candidate for testing vocal-activity detection, overlapping-call handling or audio-visual synchronization after an executable, reviewable pipeline and defensible grouped evaluation exist. It cannot establish animal-language translation or receiver understanding. Do not treat bucket row totals as independent calls or the repeated padded bucket as new evidence.
A practical starting point
Metadata-only source review; not admitted to Talk2Nature training, private storage or redistribution.
Available starting point: Pinned dataset card, provider API metadata and public code/split source text only. No Parquet, audio, accelerometer, video, calibration, weights or executable code were acquired or run.
Reuse limits: The provider declares CC BY 4.0 for V33DA++; code is separately MIT-licensed, and preprocessing tools retain their original licenses. This review is not independent legal clearance and does not cover every component or intended commercial use.
Our proposed experiment: No experiment or model run was performed. A future test should choose one task such as vocal-activity detection or source separation, exclude accelerometer oracle inputs, freeze a leakage-safe animal/session split and obtain independent scientific and evaluation review.

The next reading task
Keep metadata-only. Before any acquisition or run, require an immutable code revision with the imported data package, exact V33DA++ evaluation splits, a non-oracle baseline, rights review for all components, and independent avian-bioacoustics and ML/statistical assessment. Choose one bounded task and locked evaluation; do not use accelerometer/oracle channels as predictors.

- V33DA benchmark code and sample, pinned GitHub revision ↗
The repository provides split preparation and caller-attribution baselines. Its top-level LICENSE is MIT for software; the nested 100-event real-media sample README declares CC BY 4.0 separately. A pinned Git-tree inventory lists 334 sample files totaling 62,503,976 bytes. Follow-up source inspection found that scripts/train.py imports v33da.data modules absent from the pinned public repository tree; the advertised leave-one-bird-out path is not independently reproducible from this snapshot. Three small text metadata files were checksummed in memory; no media or Parquet bytes were acquired.
- V33DA++ overlapping-call and long-context companion dataset ↗
The V33DA++ dataset card describes reviewer-verified overlapping zebra-finch calls and padded context windows for source separation, vocal-activity detection and audio-visual synchronization. It uses the same recordings and ten birds as V33DA.
